Immigration
We’ve already touched on immigration in our policy documents, however some points should be repeated.
Increased Refugee Intake
We completely support Australia’s current ‘stop the boats’ policy to protect many lives from drowning at sea, however we do believe Australia, being a young wealthy country, can do more to intake more refugees. There are many UNHCR camps around the world with advanced processing of their current refugee processing, we should be welcoming select refugees from these camps to increase our support of those in need. We currently intake 20,000 refugees a year, Australia could support in the next five years (with a staggered approach) up to 100,000 refugees a year. With specialised cultural integration, language and training programs to increase their position within our community.
Decreased Immigration Intake
Immigration is a fantastic way to bolster Australia’s population, expand our international relationships and create new communities. Our problem lies in that we do not currently have enough housing for our current population. We need to decrease our current immigration intake to make Australian property supply stable, and then slowly increase our immigration intake again as housing supplies begin to increase. Australia is a great country and can intake many people. With proper planning, increased connected satellite cities, we will easily be able to bolster our immigration intake when the timing is right. 500,000+ is too much for Australia’s current housing supply, a drastic decrease is required. Once property supply stabilises we can then begin increasing our immigration intake back up to current levels. It should be determined by our ability to intake people, we don’t want to take new people in just to push our current Australians out onto the street with unaffordable housing.
